Ackboo turns up the amplifier

imagesFrench Hammerbass Records has put out quite a few interesting electro/dub releases, especially those from Kanka, over the 16 years that the label has existed.

One who draws much inspiration from Kanka and other producers working in the field of dub, roots and electro is Ackboo. This French producer has probably worn out 7” and 12” from the likes of Lee Perry, Zion Train, Alpha & Omega and, of course, Jah Shaka.

His debut album Turn up the Amplifier comes four years after his debut 7” – the Middle Eastern inspired dub workout Bangladesh Dub. The album comes with 14 tracks, of which eight are vocals and six are dubs or instrumentals. Vocal duties are handled by mostly lesser known singers and deejays, including Malone Rootikal, Macky Banton, Dr. B and Marcus Gad. However Omar Perry and King General also lend their voices to the project.

Turn up the Amplifier is stepping UK roots and dub that would make Jah Shaka proud. It has the usual weighty bass lines and propulsive drums and Ackboo mixes digital instrumentation with live horns, sonic wizardry and sound effects.

Highlights include Nightfall with Matic Horns on a dramatic trombone, Man Free with the fresh Marcus Gad on vocals and the thunderous and warrior-styled Ready for War and Turn Up the Amplifier with Marlene Rootikal and Macky Banton on vocals respectively.

I have a feeling Ackboo knew what he wanted to achieve with Turn Up the Amplifier and if I’m correct he has certainly succeeded.
