Shanique Marie’s confident and breezy debut

46caae_c94832c121034314b7cd188ed537b9c6Innovative Jamaican production duo Equiknoxx Music is behind Shanique Marie’s – formerly Shanz – debut EP Uno, a six track set full of sunny vibes and playful singing.

She started her career as a dancehall artist, but has now moved to a more reggae-oriented sound. Her first love was however jazz, which can be traced on Walk Away, on which she showcases her powerful vocal abilities in the latter part of the song.

The arrangements are often airy, which give Shanique Marie plenty of space to flex her voice over the bass boosted beats. Check for example the piano-driven opening track Talk or the R&B-flavored Breezy Day.

Best of the bunch is however the fierce Sweet & Dandy – not to be confused with the Maytals tune of the same name – and the edgy Dub Me, which is co-produced by Suns of Dub and underpinned by a fusion of sounds from unreleased Augustus Pablo tapes.

Shanique Marie and Equiknoxx Music are obviously full of confidence since they haven’t bothered to write either title or artist name on the cover sleeve. Let’s just hope people still discover this fresh and solid release.
