French percussionist and producer Mato – known for several mad reggae/hip-hop mas-ups – has just put out his second dubstrumental album. On Homework Dub he took on Daft Punk’s Homework and now he has reworked classic motion picture themes against a reggae backdrop. It’s like Giorgio Moroder or Ennio Morricone had recorded their scores at a cloudy Kingston studio.
Several of the themes tackled on Hollywood Dub are well-known classics, including the much-versioned Shaft theme and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, with its notable flute.
Best of the bunch is probably a lovely take on the melancholic theme from The Godfather and a mean version of The Imperial March, complete with Vader breathing, R2-D2 sounds, shattering percussion and a killer melodica playing the melody.
Create, dramatic and imaginative takes on classics. An album for other than just the movie buffs.
