Playful and boisterous on DJ Vadim’s Dubcatcher II

dj-vadim-dubcatcher-cdDJ Vadim respects no musical boundaries. Nothing is off limits. That was clear on his album Dubcatcher released in 2014. And its follow-up Dubcatcher II – Wicked My Yout follows the same playful and highly entertaining recipe.

This is DJ Vadim’s twelfth album and it’s a fusion of several genres and styles. Many with prominent bass lines. He expertly blends reggae, ska and dub with hip-hop, soul, funk and jungle. It’s playful and fun excursion rooted in the Jamaican music scene. He samples and vocal fragments to create a full-sounding, energetic and fun musical experience.

Legends such as Max Romeo, General Levy, Tippa Irie, Courtney Melody and Earl 16 all share their talent on this project. They are complemented by a host of lesser-known artists, and talents like Junior Williams, Eva Lazarus and Taiwan MC mange to make a long-lasting impression.

There’s lots of sunny vibes. The soul and gospel-infused Shine Ya Lite is probably the best example. The uplifting Hey Hey Hey is another. Originator is rub a dub for the 21st century and the tongue twisting Rubberdub Soljah certainly catches on. And I definitely want to hear more  – a lot more – from Junior Williams, who lends his slightly raspy soulful tenor to the funky Music Soljah.

With one foot in the reggae scenes from the 80s and 90s and one foot in the future, DJ Vadim has created a raw and unconventional album that manages to stand out.

A playful and genre-bending set from DJ Vadim

Vadim-DubcatcherRussian born producer and musician DJ Vadim follows no musical rules, and on his latest album Dubcatcher he has crafted a clever mix of reggae, hip-hop, bashment, soul, funk, dubstep and probably a few other genres too. He’s a genre-bending artist to say the least and has worked with luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Public Enemy, Kraftwerk, Sly & The Family Stone and Paul Weller. In 2002 he was also nominated for a Latin Grammy for his work with Spanish hip-hop group 7 Notas 7 Colores.

Dubcatcher is DJ Vadim’s eleventh studio album and neighbour with recent sets from artists and groups like Mr. Benn, Major Lazer and The Courtney John Project. It’s rich, varied and based around samples and live playing courtesy of Fat Freddy’s Drop and King Porter Stomp.

Even though DJ Vadim has glanced at the history of reggae and hip-hop, he has not tried to recreate roots reggae, dancehall from the 80s and 90s or boom rap. Dubcatcher is not the sound of yesterday, rather the sound of today and tomorrow.

On the set DJ Vadim has invited a notable and interesting list of guest artists, including Jamalski, Demolition Man, Governor Tiggy, Serocee, Katrina Blackstone, YT, Jimmy Screech and Gappy Ranks, on a remix of his single Carpenter. They sometimes fight the propulsive and fat beats, other times they float effortlessly over them delivering pop hooks and catchy melodies.

With Dubcatcher DJ Vadim has delivered a set with unprecedented energy, playful production and impressive vocal efforts, especially Demolition Man’s and Jamalski’s fiery tongue twisting on Badman and Raggamuffin Life respectively.

Jstar’s remixes shake up dance floors worldwide

JS021LPCoverSquare1440(1)Crowd-rocking and genre-switching DJ and remix wizard Jstar has shook up dance floors worldwide for the past ten years. For his new compilation Licensed Plates he has selected 14 favorites of his more than 60 official remixes dating between 2005 and 2012.

Jstar is probably most well-known for his tasty, clever and border-crossing mash-ups mixing reggae and dancehall with hip-hop, soul and R&B. Some of his finest moments are the acclaimed No Diggity where Black Street’s No Diggity rides the immortal Real Rock riddim or Regulate Rock where Jennier Lara’s reggae version of soul singer Marlena Shaw’s Woman of the Ghetto, Studio One’s ill Rockfort Rock riddim and the late Nate Dogg’s Regulate are mashed to perfection.

None of these are however included on the bass heavy and wobbling Licensed Plates. Included are instead reggae-infused re-workings of cuts from Madness, DJ Vadim, The Black Seeds, Resonators and Dub Terminator among many more. The brightest light is however Ten Feet Tall by Mr Dero & Jstar featuring Farina Miss, where the youthful and sassy Farina Miss rides a bouncy 80’s styled riddim.

Jstar has deconstructed and restructured, reshaped and built up again. He has treated the material with a sonic fusion of drum and bass, dubstep, dancehall, reggae and dub and flavored the music with audio effects, samples and a whole lot of nuances. Every time you listen back to a track you notice something new.

Licensed Plates is re-mastered from tape and the collage on the cover sleeve is made by Jstar himself. It’s currently available on CD, digital platforms or as limited double gatefold LP.
