Ward 21’s dancehall extravaganza

Ward21_Album_Cover_Digital_1200x1200One artist dancehall albums are few and far between. And strong ones are even rarer. Ward 21 has however managed to create a creative and fresh dancehall album.

Dancehall crew Ward 21 dropped their show stopping debut album Mentally Disturbed more than ten years ago, and since that set they have established themselves as clever and forward-thinking producers and engineers for both themselves and for other artists, including their very own artist camp Bada Bada GangNatalie Storm, Tifa, Timberlee, Point-O and Ci’K.

On their playful, and at times hardcore both musically and lyrically, fifth album Still Disturbed they showcase a mix of 80s and 90s dancehall updated for today’s dancehalls and clubs. The bass lines are punchy, especially the one on the Sean Paul combination Ben’ U Back. This one is pure mayhem and will tear down walls if you don’t handle it with care.

The best moments on Still Disturbed are however the vintage ones. On War Start they take on the famous Stalag riddim and on Herbs Man they version the riddim used for Johnny Osbourne’s Ice Cream Love. Strongest, though, is the single Mic Magician, a track utilizes the bouncy Greetings riddim and also samples Super Cat’s Under Pressure.

When listening to Still Disturbed – and looking at its cover – it’s clear that the chemistry between Kunley, Suku and Mean Dog is exceptional and infectious. The result is highly addictive and should not be overlooked by dancehall aficionados.
